Metric Theory Feeds the Hungry in San Francisco

One of my favorite aspects of working at Metric Theory is the opportunity to participate in the various service events we organize throughout the year, from volunteering at a children’s museum to raising money to fight MS. My favorite event is one that takes place in my own neighborhood – San Francisco’s Tenderloin District.

Metric Theory has been volunteering for the Daily Free Meals Program at Glide Memorial Church for more than a year. Located just over a mile from Metric Theory’s office, Glide Memorial provides services such as HIV testing, after-school programs, and no-cost legal services to the poor and needy. It’s also the church that provided shelter and services to Chris Gardner – the man Will Smith plays in the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness.”

Glide’s Daily Free Meals Program serves an average of 2,163 meals each day to SF’s hungry, homeless, and poor. To prepare and serve these meals, the church relies on 60 volunteers every day.

We volunteer for the breakfast shift, and MT’s marketing experts don hairnets and aprons and grab serving spoons and brooms to help out with a variety of tasks. At our last event, our president took tickets and greeted visitors, while our account services staff served pancakes and bussed tables. Meanwhile, the sales team peeled more than 50 lbs of carrots. Good work guys!

I always look forward to this volunteer event for the opportunity to get to know so many members of the community – other volunteers, Glide employees, and the community members who rely on Glide’s services. My coworkers must feel the same. Even though volunteering requires that we wake up at 5 AM, and wear ridiculous hairnets, nearly the entire office volunteers every quarter.
